MRI Scan in Singapore from $436
MRI uses magnetic resonance (not X-rays) to produce highly detailed images of brain, spine, joints, and soft tissue. No radiation. GP consultation at Mediway + referral to our accredited imaging partner + results reviewed at the clinic.
How much does an MRI scan cost in Singapore?
MRI scan prices in Singapore typically range from $436 to over $5,000 at accredited imaging partners, depending on body area, contrast use, and scan complexity. Most standard MRI scans (brain, spine, joints) are priced around $1,068-$1,199. Specialised studies like MR Whole Body ($5,014) and MR Cardiac ($2,725) are at the higher end. Mediway GP consultation is $38. All prices GST-inclusive.
What is an MRI scan?
MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) uses a strong magnetic field and radio waves (not X-rays) to produce detailed images of soft tissue, the brain, spine, joints, and organs. It is the gold standard for imaging the nervous system, ligaments, and complex soft tissue.
The scan takes place in a tube-shaped machine with a very strong magnet. MRI uses no ionising radiation, making it safe for repeated scans and generally safe in pregnancy (though typically avoided in the first trimester unless clinically essential). Scans take longer than CT (typically 20-60 minutes) and involve lying very still in the scanner.
Some MRI studies use gadolinium contrast (IV dye) to enhance specific tissues, common for cancer assessment, some brain studies, and breast MRI. Contrast is generally safe but has specific considerations for kidney disease and pregnancy.
At Mediway Medical Centre, MRI scans are arranged through our referral network. Your GP assesses symptoms, recommends the right MRI protocol, and issues a referral letter to our accredited imaging partner. Results return to us. You review findings with the Mediway GP at a follow-up consultation.

How to get an MRI at Mediway
Three-step process. Assessment and interpretation at Mediway; scan at our accredited imaging partner.
Consultation ($38)
GP assesses symptoms, confirms MRI is the right imaging (vs. X-ray / CT / ultrasound), and issues a referral letter with specific protocol. We ask about metal implants, claustrophobia, and kidney function before referral.
Scan at partner centre
Attend Radlink, our accredited imaging partner. MRI takes 20-60 minutes. You lie in a tube-shaped scanner; the machine makes loud tapping sounds (ear protection provided).
Report & review at Mediway
Partner radiologist's report returns in 3-7 working days. Return to Mediway for follow-up. The GP explains findings and coordinates next steps including specialist referral if needed.
How to prepare
Preparation varies by scan. The imaging partner will send specific instructions at booking. A summary is below.
MRI safety: what to tell your doctor
The strong magnet means certain implants or devices may be contraindicated or require special protocols. Always inform your doctor and the imaging centre before MRI if you have:
- Pacemaker, implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD), or cochlear implant
- Aneurysm clip or vascular stent (some are MRI-safe, some not)
- Metal fragments in the eye (from workplace injury, welding)
- Insulin pump, neurostimulator, or programmable device
- Joint replacement or metal plates/screws (usually safe but MRI artefact may occur)
- Tattoos with metallic ink (rare heating possible)
- Claustrophobia: sedation options can be arranged
- Kidney disease: affects contrast eligibility
- Pregnancy (especially first trimester): MRI usually avoided unless clinically essential
Frequently asked questions
01 How much does an MRI scan cost in Singapore?
MRI scan prices in Singapore range from $436 to over $5,000 at accredited imaging partners. Most standard scans (brain, spine, joints) are around $1,068-$1,199. Specialised studies (MR Whole Body $5,014, MR Cardiac $2,725) are higher. Plus $38 GP consultation. Contrast adds $392-$763. All prices GST-inclusive. Prices are subject to change and may vary depending on individual clinical needs. Please contact us for the latest pricing.
02 What is an MRI scan?
MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) uses a strong magnetic field and radio waves, not X-rays, to produce detailed images of soft tissue, the brain, spine, joints, and organs. It is widely used for imaging the nervous system and ligaments, and uses no ionising radiation.
03 Is an MRI scan safe?
Yes. MRI uses no ionising radiation. The main safety concern is the strong magnet: metal implants (pacemakers, cochlear implants, some aneurysm clips) may be contraindicated. Inform your doctor of any metal implants, surgical clips, medical devices, or metal fragments before booking. If you are pregnant or may be pregnant, inform your doctor and the imaging centre. MRI may still be considered when clinically needed, but the decision should be made by the doctor and radiology team.
04 How long does an MRI scan take?
Most scans take 20-45 minutes depending on body area and complexity. Brain MRI 20-30 minutes, spine MRI 30-45 minutes, cardiac MRI 60+ minutes. You lie still in a tube-shaped scanner; the machine makes loud tapping sounds, ear protection provided. Results return in 3-7 working days.
05 Do I need a GP referral for an MRI?
Yes. A GP consultation ($38) assesses your symptoms, confirms MRI is the right imaging (vs. X-ray or ultrasound), and issues a referral letter. The referral helps the imaging partner select the appropriate MRI protocol and sequences for your clinical question.
06 What if I'm claustrophobic?
MRI scanners are tube-shaped and can cause claustrophobia. Inform your GP before referral. Options may include additional preparation, oral or IV sedation where clinically appropriate, or referral to a wide-bore MRI centre where available. Sedation availability and fees vary by imaging provider.
07 Do I need contrast for my MRI?
Contrast (gadolinium-based IV dye) is used for selected scans: cancer assessment, some brain studies, breast MRI, and some vascular scans. Your GP and the imaging partner decide. Contrast adds $392 standard or $763 for GAD Enhance (Primovist). Contrast may not be suitable for everyone. Inform your doctor if you have severe kidney disease, are pregnant or may be pregnant, or have had a previous contrast reaction.
08 Will Mediway interpret my MRI results?
Yes. The imaging partner provides a radiologist report. You return to Mediway for a follow-up consultation where the GP explains findings in plain language, flags anything needing action, and coordinates next steps, including specialist referral if appropriate.
09 Is MRI covered by private insurance?
Coverage varies by policy. MRI ordered for symptom investigation is often covered; screening MRI (e.g. whole-body without symptoms) may not be. We provide itemised receipts for insurance submission.
