Which HIV test should you choose?

The right test depends on when your potential exposure was and how early you need a reliable result.

Very recent exposure (<2 weeks)

HIV RNA/DNA PCR: $300

Only test that can detect HIV this early (from ~10–14 days). Used when you can't wait 3 weeks for other tests to become reliable. Lab-processed, with results in 3–5 days.

Recent exposure (~3 weeks ago), want earliest reliable result

4th Gen Combo: $85

Earliest reliable rapid test. Detects both antigen and antibody, so it can catch HIV from ~3 weeks post-exposure. Same-day result, fingerprick sample.

Routine annual screening or exposure 4+ weeks ago

3rd Gen Rapid: $55

Affordable, fast rapid test. Detects HIV antibodies from ~3–4 weeks post-exposure. Good option for routine sexual-health screens.

Budget-conscious routine screening

HIV Antibody Test: $30

Standard lab-based antibody test. Most affordable option. Detects HIV from ~4 weeks post-exposure. Results in 2–5 working days.

HIV window periods

The "window period" is the time after exposure during which a test may miss an HIV infection. Testing too early can give a false negative. Here are the reliable detection windows by test type.

Window periods
  1. 10–14days

    HIV RNA/DNA PCR (earliest available)

  2. 3weeks

4th Gen Combo Ag/Ab rapid (earliest rapid)

  3. 3–4weeks

3rd Gen rapid and Antibody lab

  4. 3months

Conclusive negative for all test types

If your potential exposure was very recent, testing before the reliable window can lead to a false negative. Our team will advise the right timing when you book, or you can start with the earliest-detecting test (RNA PCR at 10–14 days) and retest at 3 months to confirm.

Urgent exposure? If you may have been exposed to HIV in the past 72 hours, you should consider PEP (Post-Exposure Prophylaxis), an emergency medication course that prevents HIV infection when started within 72 hours. PEP is not offered at Mediway: access it via any 24-hour hospital A&E or the DSC Clinic.

Preparation before your test

HIV testing needs minimal preparation.

  • Photo ID required at reception
  • No fasting required for any HIV test
  • Know your exposure date if you have a specific recent exposure in mind, as this helps our team recommend the right test and timing
  • Bring previous test results if you're comparing (optional)

If you're booking a PCR test or lab antibody test, blood is drawn at the visit. If you're booking a rapid fingerprick test, only a tiny blood sample from your finger is taken. Both take less than 5 minutes of actual sample collection.

What to expect at your visit

  1. Check in

Basement level of The Riverwalk. Private reception, so no one sees why you're there.

Frequently asked questions

01How much does an HIV test cost at Mediway?

HIV testing starts from $30 for the standard lab-based Antibody Test, up to $300 for the RNA/DNA PCR test (earliest detection). 3rd Gen rapid is $55; 4th Gen combo rapid is $85. All prices inclusive of GST. Consultation is optional at $38.

02Which HIV test should I choose?

Depends on when your potential exposure was. Within 2 weeks ago: RNA PCR ($300) detects from ~10–14 days. 3 weeks ago: 4th Gen combo ($85) detects from ~3 weeks. 4+ weeks ago or routine screening: 3rd Gen ($55) or Antibody ($30).

03How fast will I get HIV test results?

Typically 1–5 working days depending on the test. Rapid fingerprick tests are read on-site within 15–20 minutes; lab-processed antibody and PCR tests take 1–5 days. Results delivered by phone, WhatsApp, or email.

04Is HIV testing confidential?

Yes. HIV test results are not shared with MOH, insurers, or employers unless you specifically request it. Singapore law only requires doctors to notify MOH for CONFIRMED HIV-positive diagnoses, not for negative tests. Most patients choose self-pay for full privacy.

05Can I walk in without an appointment?

Booking ahead is recommended, but same-day slots are usually available. Walk in during clinic hours, or WhatsApp/call first to confirm slot availability.

06Do I need to see a doctor before the HIV test?

No. If you know which test you want, you can book and test directly. Consultation is optional at $38 if you want guidance on test selection or help interpreting results.

07What if my HIV test is positive?

A positive rapid test is always followed by a confirmatory lab test. If confirmed positive, our team provides counselling, discusses next steps, and can start antiretroviral therapy (ART) directly at our clinic. We also advise on MOH notification requirements under the Infectious Diseases Act.

08Do I need to bring anything to my appointment?

Just a photo ID. No fasting required. Test takes 5–10 minutes for rapid tests, slightly longer for blood draw (PCR or lab antibody).
