How much does a mammogram cost in Singapore?

Mammogram prices in Singapore typically range from $174.40 (2D one side) to $708.50 (3D both sides with ultrasound and implants) at accredited imaging partners. A standard 2D mammography (2 sides) is $239.80, and a standard 3D tomosynthesis (2 sides) is $457.80. Adding breast ultrasound or accounting for implants increases the price. Mediway GP consultation is $38. All prices GST-inclusive.

What is a mammogram?

A mammogram is a low-dose X-ray of the breast used for breast cancer screening and to investigate breast lumps or changes. Two main types are available: 2D mammography and 3D tomosynthesis. Most partner centres in Singapore are AI-enhanced.

2D mammography takes two flat X-ray images per breast (top-down and side). It is the standard screening modality, fast, well-validated, and the lower-cost option.

3D mammography (tomosynthesis) takes multiple thin slices through the breast, producing a layered 3D dataset. It is more sensitive for dense breast tissue and reduces the chance of being recalled for a repeat scan. 3D services are available at our Paragon imaging partner.

Mammography uses low-dose ionising radiation (around 0.4 mSv per scan, similar to a few weeks of natural background radiation). The breast is briefly compressed between two plates to spread the tissue for clearer images. This may feel uncomfortable but only lasts a few seconds per view. Mammography is not used in pregnancy unless clinically essential.

At Mediway Medical Centre, mammograms are arranged through our referral network. Your GP assesses your breast symptoms or screening needs, recommends the right protocol (2D vs 3D, with or without ultrasound), and issues a referral letter to our accredited imaging partner. Results return to us. You review findings with the Mediway GP at a follow-up consultation.

When a mammogram is recommended

Mammography is used for both routine breast cancer screening and investigation of breast symptoms:

Routine screening

  • Women aged 50-69 (every 2 years per Singapore HPB)
  • Women aged 40-49 (annual, after discussion with GP)
  • BRCA1 / BRCA2 carriers (specialist-led)
  • Strong family history of breast cancer
  • Post-menopausal screening

Symptom investigation

  • New breast lump
  • Nipple discharge (especially bloody)
  • Nipple inversion or skin changes
  • Persistent breast pain (one-sided)
  • Skin dimpling or thickening

3D tomosynthesis preferred

  • Dense breast tissue
  • Younger women (40s)
  • Previous indeterminate 2D scan
  • Strong family history
  • Reducing recall rates

Pair with breast ultrasound

  • Dense breast tissue (Singaporean women commonly)
  • Palpable lump assessment
  • Clarifying mammogram findings
  • Women with implants
  • Cyst vs solid characterisation

How to get a mammogram at Mediway

Three-step process. Assessment and interpretation at Mediway; scan at our accredited imaging partner.

1

Consultation ($38)

GP reviews your breast history, performs a clinical breast exam where indicated, and decides on the right protocol (2D vs 3D, with or without ultrasound). Referral letter issued for the imaging partner.

2

Scan at partner centre

Attend Radlink, our accredited imaging partner (Paragon centre for 3D tomosynthesis). The scan itself takes about 10-15 minutes. Each breast is compressed briefly between two plates for clear images.

3

Report & review at Mediway

Partner radiologist's report returns in 1-3 working days. Return to Mediway for follow-up. The GP explains findings and coordinates next steps including surgical or oncology referral if needed.

How to prepare

Mammography needs minimal preparation. The imaging partner will send specific instructions at booking. A summary is below.

Best timing in cycle: for premenopausal women, schedule 7-10 days after the start of your period when breasts are least tender.
Skin products: avoid deodorant, antiperspirant, lotion, talc, or perfume on chest and underarms on the day of the scan (can cause artefacts).
Clothing: wear a two-piece outfit. You will undress from the waist up and be given a gown.
Bring previous mammograms: if available, bring or arrange to have prior images sent to the imaging centre for comparison.
Implants: inform the centre at booking. Additional implant-displacement (Eklund) views are typically used. See implant variants in the pricing table.
No fasting: eat and drink normally. Take medications as usual.

Mammogram safety: what to tell your doctor

Mammography uses low-dose X-ray radiation. Tell your doctor and the imaging centre before mammography if you:

  • Are pregnant or may be pregnant (mammography is generally deferred until after delivery unless essential)
  • Are breastfeeding (still safe but the radiologist may need different positioning)
  • Have breast implants, saline or silicone (special technique used)
  • Have had recent breast surgery, biopsy, or radiation (timing may need adjustment)
  • Are under 30 years old without high-risk features (ultrasound usually preferred over mammography)
  • Have a personal or strong family history of breast cancer (your GP may discuss MRI breast screening as an alternative or adjunct)

Frequently asked questions

01 How much does a mammogram cost in Singapore?

2D mammography in Singapore starts from $174.40 (one side) or $239.80 (both sides). 3D tomosynthesis starts at $327.00 (one side) or $457.80 (both sides). Combined ultrasound and implant variants are priced separately as listed above. Plus $38 Mediway GP consultation. All prices GST-inclusive. Prices subject to change; please contact us for the latest.

02 What is the difference between 2D and 3D mammography?

2D mammography takes two flat X-ray images of each breast (top-down and side). 3D mammography (tomosynthesis) takes multiple thin slices through the breast and reconstructs them as a layered 3D dataset. 3D is more sensitive for dense breast tissue and reduces the chance of being called back for additional imaging. The Singapore HPB-subsidised programme uses 2D; many private centres offer both. 3D services are available at our Paragon imaging partner.

03 When should I start getting mammograms?

Singapore Health Promotion Board (HPB) recommends mammogram screening every 2 years from age 50 to 69 for women at average risk, and annual screening from age 40 to 49 after discussion with a doctor. Women with strong family history, known BRCA1/BRCA2 mutations, or other high-risk factors may start earlier and need more frequent imaging. Discuss your individual risk with the Mediway GP.

04 Does Mediway perform mammograms on-site?

No. Mediway does not have a mammography machine on-site. We coordinate referral to our accredited imaging partner (Radlink), with the scan performed at their imaging centre. Mediway provides the GP consultation, referral, and results review.

05 Is mammography painful?

Mammography involves brief compression of the breast between two plates, which most women describe as uncomfortable but not painful. Each compression lasts only a few seconds. Discomfort is usually less if the scan is scheduled 7-10 days after the start of your period, when breasts are least tender. Tell the radiographer if the compression is painful, they can adjust.

06 Can I get a mammogram if I have breast implants?

Yes. Mammography with implants uses a special technique (implant-displacement / Eklund views) that requires additional images, so pricing is higher than the standard scan. Tell the imaging centre at booking that you have implants. The radiographer will adjust positioning to maximise breast tissue visibility while protecting the implant.

07 Why combine mammogram with breast ultrasound?

Breast ultrasound is often added to mammography for women with dense breast tissue (common in Asian women), women under 50, women with palpable lumps, or women with implants. Ultrasound complements mammography by distinguishing cysts from solid lumps and characterising areas that look dense on mammogram. Your GP will recommend the right combination based on your history and risk.

08 Will Mediway interpret my mammogram results?

Yes. The imaging partner provides a radiologist report (typically in 1-3 working days). You return to Mediway for a follow-up consultation where the GP explains findings in plain language, flags anything needing action, and coordinates next steps including breast surgeon, oncology, or genetics referral if appropriate.

09 Is mammography covered by insurance?

Coverage varies by policy. Mammograms ordered to investigate breast symptoms are often covered; routine screening mammograms may not be. CHAS subsidies and HPB-subsidised mammograms are available at participating centres. We provide itemised receipts for insurance submission.
