What is a Statutory Medical Examination?

A statutory medical examination is a health check up required by a Singapore government agency as part of a work pass, long-term visit pass, vocational licence, or overseas visa application. The examination is used to confirm the applicant is free from specified communicable diseases and is medically fit for the role or purpose of the application.

Mediway is approved to carry out medicals for the four main regulators: the Ministry of Manpower (MOM), the Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA), the Land Transport Authority (LTA) (including PDVL and SPF driver medicals), and a range of overseas embassies and visa programmes. All four are handled at our Clarke Quay clinic, with chest X-ray on-site, phlebotomy and doctor consultation at a single visit.

Immigration & Checkpoints Authority

ICA Medical Examinations

Medicals required by the Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA) for long-term pass applications: Long-Term Visit Pass, Student Pass, and Permanent Residency. Typically includes physical examination, chest X-ray and blood tests for specified infectious diseases.

Land Transport Authority / SPF

LTA, PDVL & SPF Medical Examinations

Medicals for vocational driving licences: LTA (Vocational Licence), PDVL (Private-Hire Car Driver's Vocational Licence) and SPF (Singapore Police Force) medical requirements. Physical assessment, eyesight and hearing tests, plus screening for conditions that may affect driving.

What's Tested in a Statutory Medical

Specific tests depend on the issuing body and pass type. The components below are standard across MOM, ICA and overseas visa medicals. Exact tests are listed on each spoke page.

Chest X-Ray (Tuberculosis)

Chest X-ray imaging to screen for tuberculosis, a core requirement for MOM and ICA medicals. Performed on-site at Mediway.

Blood Test: HIV & Syphilis

Blood draw for HIV and syphilis screening. Required for most pass-type medicals and overseas visa medicals. Phlebotomy done on-site.

Malaria Screening

Malaria screening included in MOM medicals for Work Permit, S Pass and FDW 6ME. Tested from the same blood draw as HIV/syphilis.

Pregnancy Test (Where Applicable)

Urine pregnancy test included in FDW 6ME and Work Permit medicals for female applicants, per MOM requirements.

Physical Examination & Vitals

Blood pressure, height, weight, BMI, vision and hearing (for LTA / PDVL medicals), and doctor's general physical examination.

Doctor's Review & Report

Results reviewed by our doctor and a signed medical report issued in the format required by MOM, ICA, LTA or the overseas authority.

Medical Examination FAQs

Common questions from patients and HR teams.

01 Do I need an appointment for a medical examination?

No. Most medical examinations can be done on a walk-in basis during clinic hours (Monday-Friday 7:30am-6:00pm, Saturday 7:30am-1:00pm). Booking online or via WhatsApp gives you a confirmed slot and shorter waiting time, particularly useful for groups or corporate staff.

02 How much does a statutory medical examination cost?

MOM medicals (Work Permit, S Pass, EP, Dependant Pass, FDW 6ME, Pre-Employment) and ICA medicals (LTVP, Student Pass, PR) are from $30. LTA / PDVL / SPF medicals are from $30. Overseas visa medicals start from $55 for Japan and most destinations, with China visa medicals from $280 due to the additional tests required by the Chinese Embassy. Exact price depends on the tests specified by the issuing authority and is confirmed at the clinic.

03 What do I need to bring for my medical examination?

Bring your NRIC / FIN / passport, the relevant medical-examination form from the issuing authority (MOM / ICA / LTA / embassy) if you have it, two recent passport-sized photos (if the form requires them), and any prior medical reports that may be relevant. If you are unsure which form applies, bring your pass or IPA letter and we will match the correct form at the clinic.

04 How long does a medical examination take?

Most statutory medicals are completed in 30-45 minutes, including doctor consultation, blood draw, chest X-ray and vitals. Walk-in wait times range from 5 to 30 minutes depending on clinic load. Booked appointments are typically seen within 5 minutes of the scheduled time.

05 When will I receive my medical report?

Same-day reports are available for many MOM and ICA clearances where the tests do not require lab turnaround. Blood-test dependent reports (HIV, syphilis, malaria) are typically ready within 1-3 working days. Overseas visa medicals depend on the destination's required tests, confirmed at booking.

06 Is the chest X-ray done at Mediway or do I need to go elsewhere?

Chest X-ray is done on-site at Mediway, with no referral to a separate radiology centre. This is completed during the same visit as the physical examination and blood draw, saving time and avoiding a second appointment.

07 Can Mediway bill my employer directly for pre-employment or 6ME medicals?

Yes. We offer corporate accounts with monthly invoice billing (NET 30 standard, negotiable). Employers can send multiple staff or new hires directly to us. The employee does not pay at the clinic for covered visits. See our Corporate Healthcare page for the full corporate-account workflow.

08 Do you handle medical examinations for overseas visas?

Yes. We conduct overseas visa medicals including China ($280), Japan ($55), and most other destinations ($55 upwards). Each destination has its own form, tests and certification requirements. Bring your embassy form when you visit. For sea-crew and maritime visas, additional drug and alcohol screening may be required.

09 What if I need a medical examination for a pass type not listed here?

Contact us with the specifics of the pass type, issuing authority, and any form you have been given. We handle most statutory medicals required for working or residing in Singapore, and can typically conduct the examination during a single walk-in visit.

10 Does the medical examination include HIV and TB testing?

Yes. HIV testing is done via blood test, and tuberculosis (TB) screening is done via chest X-ray on-site. Both are standard components of MOM and ICA medicals for most pass types, and are included in the from-$30 price. Additional tests (syphilis, malaria, pregnancy) are added where the pass type requires them.
