Allergy Test in Singapore

Allergies are a common concern in Singapore, with triggers ranging from food allergens like shellfish and nuts to environmental factors such as dust mites, pollen, and mould. An Allergy Test in Singapore is essential for identifying these allergens and managing symptoms like respiratory discomfort, skin reactions, or severe conditions such as anaphylaxis. Early detection empowers individuals to take proactive steps toward better health and quality of life, suited to Singapore’s unique environment.

Who Should Consider an Allergy Test?

Allergy testing suits a wide range of needs, from first-time screening to managing chronic conditions. If any of these sound like you, an IgE blood test can help.

Unexplained Symptoms
Persistent respiratory discomfort, skin reactions, or recurrent hives without a clear cause.
Known Food Sensitivities
Managing reactions to shellfish, nuts, dairy, eggs, or other common food allergens.
Chronic Eczema or Asthma
Identify triggers behind atopic dermatitis, asthma, or recurring respiratory symptoms.
Children with Allergies
Paediatric panels for recurring skin reactions or respiratory issues in kids.
Environmental Triggers
Sensitive to dust mites, pollen, pet dander, moulds, or other airborne allergens.
Family History of Allergies
Baseline screening when parents or siblings have multiple allergies or atopic conditions.

How the IgE Allergy Test Works

The gold-standard blood test for identifying food and environmental allergies: accurate, non-fasting, with results in 5 working days.

01

What is the IgE Blood Test?

The Immunoglobulin E (IgE) blood test measures IgE antibodies in the blood, the same antibodies your immune system produces when reacting to food, pollen, dust mites, moulds, or animal dander. Elevated IgE levels indicate a sensitivity to specific allergens.

The test supports diagnosis of allergic rhinitis, asthma, atopic dermatitis (eczema), and food allergies. It’s often used alongside skin prick tests and clinical history to confirm allergies in Singapore. Patients with broader concerns may also consider a health screening or general consultation for a wider review.

02

How It Works

A small blood sample is drawn at the clinic and analysed in the laboratory to measure levels of specific IgE antibodies against each allergen in your panel. Elevated readings against a particular substance may indicate an allergic sensitivity to it. No fasting is required.

03

Conditions Diagnosed

The IgE blood test supports diagnosis of allergic rhinitis, asthma, atopic dermatitis (eczema), and food allergies. It is particularly useful for identifying triggers behind chronic skin reactions, respiratory discomfort, or recurrent digestive issues after eating.

04

Reading Your Results

Higher-than-normal IgE levels may suggest an allergic reaction, though interpretation should be done by a qualified healthcare professional. Elevated IgE can also be seen in parasitic infections and some immune disorders, so clinical context matters.

Common Questions About Allergy Testing

What is a food allergy?

A food allergy is an immune system reaction that occurs soon after eating a certain type of food. It happens when the immune system mistakes an ingredient in food as a harmful invader known as an allergen. Allergens usually don’t trigger reactions among most individuals; however, for those with food allergies, their immune systems wrongly consider the allergen to be a threat and mount an inappropriate response, creating antibodies to fight it. This response is known as an allergic reaction.

An allergic reaction can cause various undesirable effects on the body. Skin allergies often result in swelling on the face, mouth, lips, eyes, chest, hands, or legs. Rashes that appear nettle-like (hives) or resemble eczema may also develop.

In the gastrointestinal tract, symptoms may include abdominal pain, cramps, diarrhoea, nausea, or vomiting.

In severe cases, the affected individual may develop anaphylaxis, a full-blown, life-threatening allergic reaction. Symptoms can include acute difficulty breathing, a drop in blood pressure, widespread rashes, and swelling of the eyes, lips, throat, and mouth. In such situations, seek immediate medical attention at the nearest hospital.

What is food intolerance?

Food intolerance is caused by the absence of an enzyme needed to fully digest certain foods. It involves the digestive system rather than the immune system and is usually not life-threatening. The symptoms are generally less serious and take longer to emerge compared to food allergies. Common food intolerance reactions include nausea, stomach pain or discomfort, gas, cramps or bloating, heartburn, diarrhoea, headaches, and fatigue.

Why is a food allergy test important?

Despite advances in medical science, there is currently no cure for food allergies. The main course of action is to avoid food allergens that trigger allergic reactions. Early recognition and management of allergic reactions is essential to prevent serious health consequences, making allergy testing a valuable step in personal health planning.

How do I receive my allergy test report?

You will receive your report within 5 working days via email, or you may collect it personally from our clinic. For convenience, you may also request to receive your report via Email or WhatsApp.

Consultation is optional. If you experience any issues with your report, we will arrange a consultation for you. You can also book a consultation when scheduling your allergy test. The consultation fee is $38, which includes sessions before and after the allergy test. For related blood-based testing, see our serology tests page.

Do I need to fast before the allergy test?

No fasting is required for the IgE blood test. You may eat and drink normally before your appointment.
