Which HIV test should you choose?
The right test depends on when your potential exposure was and how early you need a reliable result.
HIV RNA/DNA PCR: $580
Only test that can detect HIV this early (from ~10–14 days). Used when you can't wait 3 weeks for other tests to become reliable. Lab-processed, with results in 3–5 days.
4th Gen Combo: $85
Earliest reliable rapid test. Detects both antigen and antibody, so it can catch HIV from ~3 weeks post-exposure. Same-day result, fingerprick sample.
3rd Gen Rapid: $55
Affordable, fast rapid test. Detects HIV antibodies from ~3–4 weeks post-exposure. Good option for routine sexual-health screens.
HIV Antibody Test: $30
Standard lab-based antibody test. Most affordable option. Detects HIV from ~4 weeks post-exposure. Results in 2–5 working days.

HIV window periods
The "window period" is the time after exposure during which a test may miss an HIV infection. Testing too early can give a false negative. Here are the reliable detection windows by test type.
If your potential exposure was very recent, testing before the reliable window can lead to a false negative. Our team will advise the right timing when you book, or you can start with the earliest-detecting test (RNA PCR at 10–14 days) and retest at 3 months to confirm.
Urgent exposure? If you may have been exposed to HIV in the past 72 hours, you should consider PEP (Post-Exposure Prophylaxis), an emergency medication course that prevents HIV infection when started within 72 hours.
Preparation before your test
HIV testing needs minimal preparation.
- Photo ID required at reception
- No fasting required for any HIV test
- Know your exposure date if you have a specific recent exposure in mind, as this helps our team recommend the right test and timing
- Bring previous test results if you're comparing (optional)
If you're booking a PCR test or lab antibody test, blood is drawn at the visit. If you're booking a rapid fingerprick test, only a tiny blood sample from your finger is taken. Both take less than 5 minutes of actual sample collection.
