Applying for a Work Permit in Singapore involves several steps — and having the right documents ready makes the whole process much smoother. This guide gives you a clear checklist of what is needed, including the mandatory medical examination, so you can prepare with confidence.
One key step is completing a mandatory medical examination before your Work Permit is issued. You can find everything you need — and book your check-up — on our Work Permit medical check-up page.
What is a Singapore Work Permit?
A Work Permit is for semi-skilled workers in sectors such as construction, manufacturing, marine shipyard, process, or services. It allows you to work legally in Singapore under a specific employer.

Unlike the S Pass or Employment Pass (EP) — which are for mid- to high-skilled professionals — the Work Permit has different eligibility criteria. Your employer is responsible for applying on your behalf through MOM’s online portal.
Work Permits are typically valid for one to two years and can be renewed, depending on your sector and your employer’s eligibility.
Key Documents for Your Work Permit Application
Preparing your documents correctly is essential. Having everything in order helps prevent delays and keeps your application on track. Here is a checklist of what your employer will generally need from you.

Personal Identification
Your identity documents form the foundation of your application. Make sure they are clear and current.
- Worker’s passport: Provide a copy of the personal particulars page. Your passport must have at least six months of validity remaining from your date of entry into Singapore.
- Passport-sized photograph: A recent, clear digital photograph taken within the last three months, meeting standard passport photo requirements.
- Worker’s written consent: A signed document authorising the employer or agent to apply for the Work Permit on your behalf.
Employment and Education Details
While your employer manages most of the employment-related paperwork, they may still need some information from you.
- Educational certificates: Depending on the job and sector, you may need to provide copies of relevant educational qualifications or technical training certificates.
- Employment details: Your employer will handle the submission of the job description, company information, and other employment-related forms directly to MOM.
The In-Principle Approval (IPA) Letter
The IPA letter is a vital document in your application journey. It is a pre-approval from the Ministry of Manpower (MOM), confirming that you are eligible to receive a Work Permit.
Once your employer’s initial application is approved, they will receive the IPA letter and forward it to you. You must carry this letter when you travel to Singapore — immigration officers will need to see it upon entry.
If you are unsure about your IPA status or what to expect at each stage, our guide on how to check your IPA status for a Work Permit walks through the process step by step.
The Mandatory Medical Examination: What to Expect
After arriving in Singapore, you must complete a mandatory medical examination before your Work Permit is issued. This check-up confirms you are fit to work and screens for infectious diseases to protect public health.

The examination must be completed by a Singapore-registered doctor within two weeks of arrival. It includes:
- A physical examination
- A chest X-ray for tuberculosis
- Blood tests for HIV and syphilis
At Mediway Medical Centre, our team provides the full MOM-required medical examination and guides you through every step, ensuring all forms are completed accurately. We are located near Clarke Quay MRT (Exit E), and walk-ins are welcome.
Employer’s Responsibilities in the Process
While you are responsible for providing your personal documents, your employer handles several key parts of the Work Permit process.
- Submitting the application: They or their agent file the Work Permit application online via MOM’s portal.
- Security bond and medical insurance: For non-Malaysian workers, employers must purchase a security bond and medical insurance on your behalf.
- Quotas and levies: Employers must follow foreign worker quota rules and pay monthly levies specific to the sector.
- Pass issuance: After you arrive and pass your medical examination, they finalise the process by registering your address and issuing your Work Permit card.
Requirements are based on MOM guidelines at the time of writing. Visit mom.gov.sg for the latest information.
How Long Does the Process Take?
Once your employer submits the application, initial approval typically takes a few working days. After you arrive in Singapore and complete the mandatory medical examination, allow a further few working days for results to be processed before your Work Permit card is issued.
Completing your medical check-up promptly after arrival helps avoid delays. At Mediway, results are typically available the next working day, so you can keep your application moving without unnecessary waiting.
If your Work Permit card takes longer than expected, your employer can check the application status directly through MOM’s online portal.
